jeweledeyes: Sailor Venus thinks you're a loser (Jesse x Suze)

A couple of weeks ago, I made a trip to Carmel-by-the-Sea to take some photos of Mediator locations. I've been wanting to do this for years, since I live in northern California, but was never able to plan out a trip. I wasn't able to make it everywhere I wanted to go, but I did get some good shots of the mission and the school!

The first thing I learned on this trip is that Meg might have been off about some of her details. For instance, even though it's the middle of summer, that fog definitely did not burn off and provide us with balmy 70 degree weather. In fact, it was gray, misting, and freezing cold all day, and there I was in my "but it was 100+ in the central valley" clothing.

Highway 1 going into Carmel is lined with forests of cypress and eucalyptus (my favorite!) trees

Monterey Bay from Highway 1

Downtown Carmel is very quaint and looks honestly a lot like Disneyland.

See what I mean?

While there was no Coffee Clutch or Peninsula Pizza, I did catch a glimpse of a few similar attractions in town.

I had a hard time getting a shot, but Pizza My Heart is decorated with surf boards and has a general surf motif—right up Sleepy and Dopey's alley!

My first view of Mission San Carlos Borromeo del Rio Carmelo, from outside the gates

I was confused going all the way through Carmel because the entire town is hilly, but none of the hills are really high enough to have a view from, and I thought, "I wonder where Suze's house is supposed to be." Then we got to the mission and I realized...

OHHH. THOSE hills.

(They look distant in the photo, but they were actually pretty close—if you kept going down that street the church was on, I'd guess you'd hit the hills in less than 10 minutes. There were a few scattered houses that I could see up there, and I know you'd be able to see the mission and the bay from there.)

First order of business was to check out the school, where I learned something else that's a bit problematic for The Mediator.

Grades K-8!

Well, I still took a few shots of the school grounds.

Freezing my butt off. (In my defense, the forecast had said it was going to be mid-70s, which is why I thought shorts and a sweater would be okay. XD)

Next order of business was the mission grounds. I started off in the front courtyard, looking for the statue of Father Serra that, you know, "lost his head."

There were these big guys, but neither of them was Father Serra. I think one is St. Francis and I don't remember who the other one is XD

I thought I was in the right courtyard because there was a fountain

and palm trees

and a bronze statue of Father Serra

No Native American women kneeling at his feet, though

But then, after I left, I actually took a look at the map they'd given me and discovered

this huge courtyard that's surrounded by the school (aka accessible by breaking in through Mr. Walden's classroom) and has a big fountain in the middle and probably a statue of Father Serra in it, too.

Well, here are some more shots of that wrong courtyard, anyway.

Last stop was the mission graveyard, which was really small, not what I expected at all.

This path leads towards the school and the larger courtyard that I missed.

My only regret with this trip is that the mission was pretty much the only Mediator location I got to see (and I didn't even get all of it). I went over with a family member who literally only wanted to get lunch, swing by the mission for 10 minutes, and go home again. That's why I missed that other courtyard—I didn't even get a chance to look at the map while we were there. I really hope I'll be able to go over to Carmel again sometime soon and can complete the location tour!

Update, Feb. 2014: I don't know when I'll get another chance to go to Carmel again, since I moved out of state less than a month after my trip. But if I ever can make it back down there, I'll make a point of checking out the big courtyard and getting more pictures of Mediator locations!
